In this Q&A, Connor O’Neill, Sales Director at Technology Lab, shares his journey from a college golfer to a technology sales expert focusing on K-12 independent schools. Connor dives into the unique challenges and rewarding experiences of working with charter schools, emphasizing the tailored technology strategies that set Technology Lab apart. From the importance of long-term planning to the critical role of customized solutions, Connor offers valuable insights into how Technology Lab is transforming the education sector.
Background and Role at Technology Lab
AW: Let’s start with your background and your role at Technology Lab.
CO: My journey to Technology Lab is an interesting one. I was initially a student-athlete, playing golf while attending school in Kansas City. Unfortunately, after a series of injuries, I realized that a professional golf career wasn’t in the cards, so I had to make some major decisions about my future. Technology has always fascinated me, so when I discovered an internship opportunity, I jumped on it. That’s when I first met James Pope, who is now the Chief Revenue Officer at Technology Lab.
Before joining Technology Lab, James and I worked together at a different company for over three years selling technology solutions, and I loved the relationship we built during that time. After a few career shifts, always staying within the technology sector, I reunited with James at Technology Lab. He told me about the company’s focus on K-12 independent schools and the transformational impact the company is having—from tech-enabled classrooms to more efficient operations. The opportunity to join the company and work alongside James again was too good to pass up.
Appeal of the K-12 Education Sector
AW: What drew you to the K-12 education sector? Was it different from selling to general businesses?
CO: Absolutely. One of my biggest draws was how James always spoke about working with charter schools. Selling to small and medium-sized businesses often felt like an uphill battle. Many of these businesses don’t see technology as a strategic investment; they view it as a quick fix or one-off purchase. But schools, especially charter and private schools, are heavily invested in technology and understand its importance in achieving their educational goals.
James shared that the education sector has been amazing to work with. Technology Lab built its entire business model around schools, offering tailored solutions that truly resonate with educators. For instance, we developed a scheduling link specifically for teachers, who typically only have one or two times a day when they can address technology issues. That level of customization is something that resonates deeply with our clients.
Working with Charter Schools: A Unique Experience
AW: You’ve mentioned charter and private schools quite a bit. What stands out to you about working with them?
CO: What stands out is school leaders’ vision and dedication. For example, I recently spoke with a school leader in Atlanta who’s planning to open a school in 2026 with a focus on entrepreneurship and financial literacy. The commitment to providing students with real-world skills like financial literacy, taught by actual financial advisors, is phenomenal. It’s something that’s often talked about but rarely implemented in traditional education.
Being able to support these visionary leaders and contribute to the development of future leaders is incredibly rewarding. We have a small role, but it’s crucial. Ensuring their school’s technology runs smoothly gives them more time and energy to focus on their students.
Challenges in the Education Sector
AW: What are some of the biggest challenges you see when working with charter and independent schools?
CO: One of the biggest challenges is the scheduling of IT support. School leaders and teachers are incredibly busy. That’s why we’ve developed solutions like our scheduling link, which allows teachers to book time with a technician during their limited availability.
Another challenge is device management, particularly with Chromebooks. Students can be rough with these devices, and if they aren’t proactively managed, they can fail during crucial times like standardized testing. Ensuring that devices are up to date and functioning properly is critical.
Asset management is another area where schools often struggle. There’s often a lack of clarity about who’s responsible for tracking devices—operations or the technology team. Without proper tracking, schools can’t plan for replacements or budget for new equipment, which can lead to unexpected expenses.
Tailored Technology Strategies for Schools
AW: How does Technology Lab tailor its strategies to meet the unique needs of schools?
CO: We take pride in offering customized solutions that meet the specific needs of each school. For instance, while most schools might use Chromebooks, we work with an aviation academy that requires PCs because their flight software only runs on that platform. In cases like this, we develop a custom strategy, which might include additional warranties or financing options to accommodate the more expensive equipment.
We also offer long-term planning and strategy as an outsourced CTO (Chief Technology Officer). Whether a school wants to become an Apple School or prefers a mix of devices, we provide a strategy that aligns with its goals and ensures its technology supports its academic goals.
Personal Satisfaction as a Sales Director
AW: What do you enjoy most about your role as a Sales Director at Technology Lab?
CO: My favorite part of the job is advocating for our clients. I love building relationships and genuinely getting to know the people we work with. While technology is at the core of what we do, it’s the personal connections and the impact we have on these schools that make the work fulfilling. Whether it’s helping a school integrate new technology or simply making their day-to-day operations smoother, knowing that we’re making a difference is super motivating and always a win for me.
Looking Ahead
AW: Any final thoughts on how you plan to continue growing with Technology Lab and helping schools?
CO: I’m focused on deepening our relationships with schools and continuing to provide them with the tools they need to succeed. Whether through tailored technology strategies, ongoing support, or simply being there when they need us, I aim to ensure that Technology Lab remains a trusted partner for schools across the region. After all, in this line of work, it’s not just about making par—it’s about going the extra mile to drive success and help our clients reach the green.
